The title refers to an ancient legend and heraldic symbol of watchfulness. The theme of vigilance relates to the site: the sculpture stands in front of the city’s new justice center, which houses the courts and police.
The subject, a wading bird, suits the artwork’s location in rain garden landscaping.
Since the underlying legend concerns a sentry who never sleeps, nighttime lighting was an important part of this commission.
The commission also included foundation and landscaping work.
